Government :
The Kingdom of Morocco is a constitutional, democratic and social
monarchy which became independent (from French rule) in 1956. The
king is Muhammad VI since July 1999. He is the political, as well
as the religious leader of the country.
Largest cities (population) :
Rabat (Capital ; 1.4 mio), Casablanca (business center ; 3.5 mio)
; Fès (cultural and intellectual center 775'000) ; Marrakech
(main city of the South ; 750'000).
Main resources :
Agriculture (citrus fruits and vegetables), food-processing, cattle-breeding,
fishing, mechanics and electronics (branches of Peugeot and Thomson),
textiles (Frances 1st supplier in clothing), phosphates (3rd
world producer and 1st in export).
Tourism :
Primary source of foreign currencies after the monetary transfers
made by Moroccans from abroad.
